Welcome to the Island of the gods! After being picked up by your driver at Denpasar Airport you will be taken to your hotel in Sanur, a mere 15-45 minute drive away. Take a moment to get settled before heading out to tour Sanur's animated streets where hundreds of restaurants and colorful shops are waiting to be discovered. Be sure to catch the sunset from the comfort of a bean bag chair on the beach.
Day 2: Seminyak
Drive a short distance west to Seminyak and take advantage of a free day to go shopping, relax on the beach or by the pool of your hotel, or treat yourself at the local spa. If you're up for more adventure, you may wish to organize an activity or excursion through your local specialist. And remember to watch the beautiful sunset from the beach!
Day 3: Pemuteran
In the morning you will drive northwest to Pemuteran with a stopover in Bedugul — located north of the center of Bali. Visit the local market and Ulun Danu Batur Sacred Temple on Bratan Lake. This temple is located 3,937 feet above sea level and is dedicated to Dewi Danu (goddess of the lake). After lunch, you will be driven to Pemuteran.
Driving distance: 87 miles
Duration: 3.5 hours
Hop aboard a local boat and sail five miles further northwest to Menjangan (Deer) Island. Part of the Bali Barat National Park, Menjangan Island is a protected zone where the corals thrive and will leave you amazed at their beauty. Explore the colorful underwater world, snorkeling in the warm Java Sea before heading back to Pemuteran.
Day 5: Munduk via Banjar and Brahmavihara-Arama
It is time to leave the northern coast and experience the Balinese countryside. On the way, why not bathe in Banjar Hot Springs? The three sacred baths are ideal for relaxing and enjoying one another's company. Afterward, you will head to the only Buddhist monastery in Bali, Brahmavihara-Arama (Vihara Buddha Banjar), near Lovina in north Bali. Spend the rest of the afternoon driving along the beautiful and winding roads crossing tropical jungles to Munduk.
Munduk is a charming village that sprawls from the top of the mountains to the valley below. Placed between the clouds and the surrounding three lakes, it offers breathtaking views and if you dare trek further into the jungle, the scenery is simply magnificent and well worth your efforts. Be sure to look for the Panahbarak and Langham waterfalls—keep a sweater with you, as the weather cools the higher you go.
Driving distance: 37 miles
Duration: 2.5 hours
Start the day early with a morning hike in the Munduk jungle, seeking the majestic waterfalls. Cross varied landscapes of bright greens, lush plantations (coffee, cacao, and clove) and witness traditional local scenes of the island before heading back to the hotel in Munduk. Spend the afternoon at your leisure.
Day 7: Scenic drive to Ubud
Spend the morning driving back toward Bedugul, serene Tamblingan and Buyan lakes on your right and the Java Sea on your left, before picking up the road to Ubud.
On the way, discover UNESCO World Heritage site Jatiluwih and its breathtaking rice terraces. The tiered rice fields form a natural amphitheater and provide a stunning overview of the Balinese irrigation system. Leaving rice fields behind, you will then make your way to Wongaya Gede to see Pura Luhur Batukaru (Batukaru Temple), which literally translates to "coconut," referring to the shape of Mount Batukaru, the volcano the temple is built upon. From Pura Luhur Batukaru you will continue on to the cultural center of Bali, Ubud.
Driving distance: 37 miles
Duration: 3 hours
Ubud offers a host of activities that will not disappoint, the activity, however, is up to you. Perhaps a walk in the Mandala Suci Wenara Wana (Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary)—so popular, that 10,000 tourists visit the sanctuary every month! Or visit the Gunung Kawi temple and funerary complex, or the neighboring Tegallalang rice fields.Interested in local history and art? If so, do not miss Ubud's museums: the Blanco Renaissance Museum and the Neka Art Museum, or check out traditional Balinese dance or the local cuisine. Take some time to wander around the colorful market. As Bali is centrally located, many neighboring touristic sites are accessible, you may be interested in a number of sports activities: rafting, hiking, tree climbing, or a bike tour if the time allows.
Day 9: Sunrise trek on Gunung Batur
Get an early start and drive to Gunung Batur (Mount Batur)—an active volcano—to enjoy another gorgeous sunrise. Trek to the summit (1.5-2 hours) before the sun has shone its first light. Reaching a height of 5,633 feet, you may feel like you can touch the clouds! Below Gunung Batur is Batur Lake and far off in the distance to the southeast side of Batur Lake is Gunung Abang and Gunung Agung. As you trek around the volcano crater and back down its side, you may see and smell escaping vapors.
Finish the day recovering with a spa treatment (3-hours) back in Ubud.
Transfer to Padangbai Pier to take the boat to Gili Air. Because motorized vehicles aren't allowed on the island, reach your accommodation by horseback or on foot.Driving distance: 19 miles
Duration: 1.5 hours; 1.5-hour boat ride
As honeymooners, Gili Air provides the perfect backdrop for romantic photo ops. The day is free for you to decide how you want to spend your time: snorkeling, diving, or relaxing with a massage.
Day 12: Gili Air day cruise
Board a boat driven by a local captain that takes you to the three Gili Islands. His knowledge of the area allows you to discover unique places where fish and wild turtles live near colorful corals. Enjoy watching the sea turtles rise to the surface.
Take the boat back to Padangbai where your driver will meet you and drive you to your hotel in south Bali. Jimbaran, a fishing village and coastal resort town located on the northwestern side of the Bukit Peninsula, offers white-sand beaches while the quiet surf allows you to swim with ease. Have dinner at a table facing the sea and observe the beautiful sunset. The addition of some candles adds to the romantic atmosphere, making your last night all the more special.
Distance: 34 miles
Duration: 1.5-hour boat ride; 1.5-hour drive
Transfer to Denpasar airport (15 to 45 minutes) for your international flight. If your schedule allows, discover the Bukit peninsula starting with Pura Luhur Uluwatu. The densely forested area overlooks the turquoise ocean from atop a hill. If you have enough time, stop at Pantai Balangan (Balangan Beach) on the way back to enjoy a cocktail or lunch while watching surfers ride the waves.
